AI Research Assistants

The tools listed below are free to use and have been in development for several years by non-profit research/programming organizations with the goal of accelerating research methods for things like systematic reviews, visualizations, and even generative summaries. They also are focused on academic sources in the sciences and social sciences.

Note that similar for-profit AI tools are not included in this list, such as Connected Papers, Consensus, Elicit, LitMaps, ResearchGPT, Scholarcy, and Scite. For some of those, there are a limited number of free uses (visit their sites for more details on pricing).

Semantic Scholar
This free AI-driven search and discovery tool provides a streamlined search platform for over 200 million academic papers. Developed within the Allen Institute for AI to support high-quality research. Has a beta Semantic Reader tool.
ResearchRabbit
Free to use with an account sign-up. This is an AI-based literature mapping tool. Using a “seed” article, the platform finds related articles that you can explore through a bubble map visualization. This initiative is supported by a development collective, which has pledged to keep the core discovery functionalities open for all to use.
ASReview Lab
Free to download and use. A machine-learning software that can systematically review large amounts of articles/content according to your preferences. Coordinated by Utrecht University, the software is part of a non-profit initiative driven by multidisciplinary researchers and system engineers worldwide.
