Search Tips for Library Databases

Library databases primarily rely on Boolean logic (and, or, not) and "word matching" to yield optimal search results. Word matching looks for the exact words or phrases you entered. Here are some tips with that in mind!

For scholarly analysis: Enter the name of director, film, or genre followed by the word criticism.
"ken burns" criticism   [quotes around multiple words retrieve exact matches for that search string]
jazz documentary criticism
historical documentar* criticism   [* retrieves matches for multiple endings: documentary, documentaries, documentarian]

For interviews:
"ken burns" interview
"ken burns" conversation

For reviews:
"searching for sugar man" review
"ken burns" jazz documentary review

More search terminology: Pay attention to the terms and descriptors in your search results. Many databases have a Subject filter that reveals more terminology. Use the filters or try new searches with other terms to see what else comes up.

For more about Boolean logic see this short video from McMaster Libraries.

Critic Reviews in Popular Media

Internet - Review Aggregators:

  • Rotten Tomatoes: Aggregates and links to critic reviews from major news publications and websites.
  • Metacritic: Aggregates reviews from various sources and provides a weighted average score. Links to critic reviews.

Internet - Film Websites and Blogs:

  • Criterion Collection: Has essays and The Daily posts on classic and contemporary films.
  • IndieWire: Provides news, reviews, and interviews from the independent film world.

Alert! Some publications require you to pay or create an account to read their articles. Before you pay:

  1. Check the library: Search for the article or publication title in our library catalog
  2. Get the full text: If the Clark Library subscribes to that publication, there will be a link(s) for you to follow.
  3. Request if needed: If the library doesn't have it, request it through our Interlibrary Loan service. This enables you to borrow articles or book chapters from other libraries.
