Citing Multimedia

Images

To create a citation for a digital image found on a website in APA style (7th edition), locate the following pieces of information:

  • The name of the creator of the digital image
  • The date the image was created or published
  • The title of the digital image
  • The title of the website that the image was found on
  • URL

Photographer, F.M.  (Year of Publication). Title of photograph [Digital Image].  Website Name. URL.

Music

To create a citation for music in APA style (7th edition), locate the following pieces of information:

  • Artist name
  • Publication date
  • Song title
  • Album name
  • Composer and/or performer (if different from the artist)
  • Record label

Single Song or Track

Recording artist. (Year of release). Title of song [Song]. On Title of album [Album]. Record label. 

Bridges, L. (2018). Bad bad news. [Song]. On Good thing [Album]. Columbia.

 

Album

Recording artist. (Year of release). Title of album [Album]. Record label.

Beyonce. (2016).  Lemonade [Album]. Parkwood Entertainment.

Video

To create a citation for a video in APA style (7th edition), locate the following pieces of information:

  • Real name of the creator (If the user’s real name is not available, include only the screen name, without brackets)
  • Name or username of the creator
  • Title of the video
  • Title of the website
  • Duration of video
  • Publication date
  • Title of website where video was found
  • URL

When the Poster's Name is known: 

Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial. of person who posted the video if known. [User name that posted the video] . (Year video was posted, Month Day). Title of video [Video]. Website Name. URL

When the Poster's Name is not known: 

User name that posted the video. (Year video was posted, Month Day). Title of video [Video]. Website Name. URL

Note: According to APA, for citing purposes the person who posted the video is credited as the author.

To create a citation for a digital image found on a website in Chicago style (17th edition), locate the following pieces of information:

  • The name of the creator of the digital image
  • The title of the digital image
  • The date the image was created or published
  • The title of the website that the image was found on
  • The names of any other contributors responsible for the digital image
  • The publisher of the image
  • The location of the image, such as a URL​
  • Date accessed (only include if there is no publication date)

Last, First M. Image Title. Month Date, Year Created. Collection, Museum/Institution, Location. Accessed Month Date, Year. URL.

Artist's Last name, Artist's First name. Title of the Song. Publisher, Year of publication, Accessed Month Day, Year. URL.

Spotify

  • The name of the creator of the digital image
  • The title of the digital image
  • The title of the website that the image was found on
  • The names of any other contributors responsible for the digital image
  • Version of the image (if applicable)
  • Any numbers associated with the image (if applicable)
  • The publisher of the image
  • The date the image was created or published
  • The location of the image, such as a URL​

Creator’s Last name, First name. “Title of the Digital Image.” Title of the Website, First name Last name of any contributors, Version (if applicable), Number (if applicable), Publisher (if applicable), Publication date, URL.

Last name, First name of the creator. “Title of the Film or Video.” Title of the Website, role of contributors and their First name Last name, Version, Numbers, Publisher, Publication date, URL.

If the author’s name is the same as the uploader, only cite the author once. If the author is different from the uploader, cite the author’s name before the title
