Distance Education Student Services: Getting Book Chapters

Getting Book Chapters Overview

If you can identify a single chapter from any book, whether owned by UP or not, the Clark Library will obtain a PDF of the chapter for you. To get a book chapter:

  1. Identify the book chapter that you would like to order.
  2. Login to UP ILLiad and fill out the Book Chapter order form to request the chapter.
  3. You'll receive a PDF of the chapter in your UP ILLiad account within 3-5 days; we'll email you when the PDF is ready for you to retrieve.

How Can I Find the Chapter Titles?

In the UP Library Search catalog, the full record for a book will sometimes have a list of chapter titles. You'll find the list in the "Details" section, under "Description." Alternatively, you can use the same methods to locate chapter titles that you would use to locate page numbers -- see the "How Can I Find Page Numbers?" box to the right.

Screen capture of UP Library Search catalog shows Book Title highlighted under "Title," and "Chapter Titles" highlighted under "Description."

Why Are Requests Limited to One Chapter Per Book?

To abide by copyright law, Clark Library staff consider four factors of Fair Use, including "the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole." Generally, staff consult the copyright brevity guidelines which stipulate 1 chapter or 10% of the work, whichever is less.

How Can I Find Page Numbers?

To locate page numbers for the chapter you want to order, try these three methods:

1. Try's "Look Inside" feature:

On the Amazon website, look up your book. Then, select the "Look Inside" link to get to the Table of Contents, which will probably have the starting page number for each chapter.

2. Look up the book in Google Books:

Look up your book in Select the book from the results list, and then select the drop-down menu on the right-hand side to obtain a table of contents.

3. Ask for help from the Reference Team:

  • Use Library Chat to ask questions from anywhere
  • Email your question to
  • Call the library's Research Desk: 503.943.7788 (toll-free 1.800.841.8261 x7788) | 503.943.7111 or 800.841.8261 | 5000 N. Willamette Blvd., Portland, OR 97203-5798 | © 2020 University of Portland, All Rights Reserved
