Distance Education Student Services: Getting Book Chapters

Getting Book Chapters Overview

If you can identify a single chapter from any book, whether owned by UP or not, the Clark Library will obtain a PDF of the chapter for you. To get a book chapter:

  1. Identify the book chapter that you would like to order.
  2. Login to UP ILLiad and fill out the Book Chapter order form to request the chapter.
  3. You'll receive a PDF of the chapter in your UP ILLiad account within 3-5 days; we'll email you when the PDF is ready for you to retrieve.

How Can I Find the Chapter Titles?

Note: you can request the table of contents through interlibrary loan, if you don't find what you need using the tips below.

In the UP Library Search catalog, the full record for a book will sometimes have a list of chapter titles.

In the Details section, look for:

Title = Book title

Contents = Chapter titles

How Much Can I Obtain from Each Book?

We can obtain up to 10% of each book, whether owned by UP or not, due to copyright law.

To abide by copyright law, Clark Library considers four factors of Fair Use, including "the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole." Staff also consult copyright guidelines.

Questions? Please contact the Interlibrary Loan Department.

How Can I Find Page Numbers?

To locate page numbers for the chapter you want to order, try these three methods:

1. Try Amazon.com's "Look Inside" feature to see the table of contents, which will likely have the starting page number for each chapter.

2. Look up the book in Google Books, then choose the drop-down menu to see the table of contents, which includes page numbers.
